Alcohol
History
We have always been a nation of drinkers. Originally water was turned into an alcoholic drink to make it drinkable and to help it last longer. However it only had a small amount of actual alcohol in it. In the 1800’s Gin became such a big problem that the government passed laws about it.
Today
Drinking is still a sociable event but many young people are drinking too much and ‘binge drinking’.Law
There are laws to protect young people from the dangers of alcohol. Most of these relate to buying alcohol and the places you can do so.
Licensed Premises
Pubs, Off Licences, Supermarkets and restuarants have to be licensed to sell or serve alcohol. You need to be 18 & over to buy alcohol in licensed premises. It is an offence to buy it or have it bought for you or to be knowingly sold it.Meals
If you are having a proper meal in a restaurant or pub restaurant, you may be served beer, porter or cider if you are 16 or over.
Designated Places
Many public places, parks or open spaces are designated as no drinking areas. If you do not comply you could be arrested.Confiscation
If you are under 18 and in a designated place you will have the alcohol confiscated. Any alcohol that over 18’s have that may be given to you, can also be confiscated. Open containers can be disposed of by pouring the contents away. If you refuse to hand over the alcohol you could be arrested.Victims
If you have drunk too much you are more likely to become a victim of crime. People’s attitudes change when they have been drinking and some become violent. Arguments start and people are assaulted. Others may take advantage of you sexually.
Drinks
Be careful who you accept drinks from. Some people may put drugs in it as well. If you cannot keep an eye on your drink all the time then leave it and get another drink.Drink Drive
Your coordination is not so good when you have been drinking or taking drugs. To drink and drive is wrong, dangerous and means others may get hurt or killed. It’s also against the law.
You may be the passenger. If you have been drinking do you know how much the driver has drunk. Is it worth the risks?
