Day 12: Gary attends a Policeman's funeral

Gary the RPU at Dobson's funeralGary was in mixed moods today because he went to the funeral of a retired Policeman. On the one hand he was very sad because the man had died but he was also very proud because the church was packed out with people wishing to pay their respects to the man, whose name was Brian Dobson.

A lot of people have written into the local paper with happy memories of PC Dobson who would always be riding around Whitnash on an old black bicycle. Mr Dobson always wore his Policemans helmet which would protect him if he fell off his bike. He also made sure that people had lights on their bicycles if they were riding in the dark and he would stop people if they had more than one person on a bike (unless it was a special bike built for two people of course).

Do you wear a cycle helmet when you go out on your bike? Do you have lights on your bicycle? If you haven't got a cycle helmet or cycle lights perhaps you should add them to your Christmas list.

The people of Whitnash were so fond of Mr Dobson that when a new housing estate was built they named a road after him Dobson Lane. Not many people get to have a road named after them and even fewer are alive to see it happen.

Mr Dobson was a very special policeman and we hope that the new Safer Neighbourhoods initiative coincidentally introduced this week will see more Police officers patrolling on foot or on bicycle just like Mr Dobson did more than 20 years ago.

Gary the RPU by Donson Lane street signGary went to the Church in Leamington and then helped to escort the funeral procession back to Dobson Lane where flowers were left as a tribute to the great man himself.

Gary says - "Wear a cycle helmet and put lights on your bike or Mr Dobson will not rest in peace!"
