Day 20: Gary learns the importance of good eyesight
What a horrible time of the year it is now with long dark nights, frosty mornings or damp windy days. The windscreen mists up so easily and the wipers make a noise on the glass. It all makes driving so much more difficult. Windscreens and windows must be kept clean and free of ice or mist. All lights need to be working and the washers and wipers capable of cleaning the windows. However the car is not the only thing that needs to be maintained.
Our eyes are responsible for 90% of what information goes into our brains when we are using the road so it is very important, particularly at this time of the year, that we ensure our eyes, like our cars are well maintained and fit for the job we ask them to do. As we get older our eyesight deteriorates but far too many people do not bother to get their eyes tested, not realising how bad their eyesight is getting.
Gary has found a magazine in Specsavers opticians which says that 1 in 6 people who took part in an eyesight test at the recent motor show actually failed the test and shouldn't be driving without glasses or contact lenses. Some websites suggest as many as 13 million people are driving around this country with uncorrected vision. No wonder there are so many collisions! I wonder how many could have been avoided by a simple eye test?
Gary is trying his friend's spectacles on for size. I think these are a little too big for him though do you?
Gary says "Get your eyes tested - Thirty minutes in the opticians chair is better than a lifetime spent in another one!"
