Day 4: Gary the RPU Bear goes to court
It is the aim of Warwickshire Police to make Warwickshire the safest place to be. The Roads Policing Unit therefore try to make the roads safer for everyone and they pay special attention to dangerous drivers who put other peoples lives at risk.
Today Gary went to Stratford magistrates court where a motorcyclist was pleading Not Guilty to a charge of Dangerous driving, earlier in the year. The motorcyclist had overtaken the Marked Police Jaguar and then ridden at around 100 miles per hour on a road restricted to 50 miles per hour before then entering a 30 mph zone, while still travelling at around 100 mph.
Speed restrictions are there for a reason and in this case the man was riding into a busy town with lots of shops and houses nearby. At 100mph he would be moving at 45 yards every second. He would not have been able to stop quickly in an emergency and might easily have killed himself or someone else.
Most of the Roads Policing Unit vehicles have cameras fitted which can record all the things they see in their travels. Gary is watching the video before going to court.
The magistrates watched the video of the rider and agreed his riding was very dangerous. They have banned him from driving for a year and fined him £800. If he had killed someone while riding like this he could have gone to prison for up to 14 years.
At court the man on this video told the magistrates that he has a new baby, only 5 days old and to consider this before giving him a prison sentence. The magistrates were kind to him and didn't lock him up this time. Hopefully by taking his licence off him the Magistrates have made the man think more carefully about his riding in the future and he will now be able to live long enough to watch his first child grow up. Too many motorcyclists don't get that opportunity.
Gary says that while motorcycles are great fun, motorcyclists are very vulnerable. While they only make up about 1% of all road users they also represent over 25% of all fatal and seriously injured casualties.
Gary says "Don't use the roads as your racetrack !"
