Day 6: Gary has a very busy day
On Thursday night Gary stayed with the collision investigators and was called out from home in the middle of the night to yet another road traffic collision. This is the third serious injury accident he's been to in a week!
Gary helps them set up the floodlights so that in the darkness they can better see the car and the marks left on the road.
Gary then helps them measure up the scene so they can draw a plan later. The collision investigators have had lots of special training so they can work out why and how a crash has happened even when there are no witnesses there to tell them. Unfortunately as lots of collisions happen at night they don’t get too much sleep.

Back at the station Gary is given the accident report form to complete - poor Gary he's tired but he cannot go to bed just yet.
He didn’t get much sleep last night because of the callout, but today he is back to work early. He is off to a conference with some family liaison officers (known as FLO's). These people are specially trained to help families when someone they love has been killed, or so seriously injured on the road, that their lives will be changed forever. This conference was run by a brilliant charity called Brake who provide lots of help, advice and support to families affected by serious road collisions. A lot of what they do is useful for the Police FLO's too as it helps them to know who else can help when disaster strikes. Warwickshire Police are glad of the support they get from Brake which makes the FLO's job so much easier to do.
The autumn and winter months usually mean that the Roads Policing Unit will be extra busy as more cars and motorbikes crash on dark and slippy roads while cyclists and pedestrians are often hit by cars or lorries because they carried no lights and wore dark clothing so drivers couldn’t see them.
Gary says that everyone should read the BRAKE website www.brake.org.uk. Reading the tragic experiences of other families really make you take road safety seriously.
Gary says "It doesn’t just happen to other people - it could happen to you - so be careful on our roads!"
Sleep well tonight Gary, you've been a very busy bear.
