Day 19: Gary helps at a Christmas Drink Drive check
3000 people are killed or seriously injured on our roads each year in drink drive related crashes and nearly one in six of all road deaths involve drivers who are over the legal limit. In Warwickshire last year, 124 people were injured in drink related collisions. The RPU target drink drivers all year round, but at this time of year it is important to remind motorists the dangers of drink driving and regular high profile checks will be carried out through December. Drink driving enforcement is essential in reducing death and injury on the roads.
Look Gary's helping put the signs out so that officers at the check can be seen and safe.
Here is Gary helping to give a breath test at the check.
This driver had not been drinking, but during the night RPU officers arrested a man riding a motorbike who was nearly twice the legal limit! If he is convicted at court that means he will have a criminal record, will lose his driving licence for at least a year, could lose his job, and that only some of the possible consequences!
100,000 drivers are convicted each year for drink driving. You don't have to be in a crash to be breath tested. The Police can ask you to take a breath test if they suspect you have been drinking, or if you commit a moving traffic offence.
Any amount of alcohol affects your ability to drive safely and there is no failsafe guide as to how to stay under the legal alcohol limit or how much you can drink and still drive safely.
Gary says 'The only safe option is not to drink if you plan to drive'
