Day 22: Gary has a day with the ladies on the Road Safety Unit
Gary has been missing his girlfriend Lisa who is away at the moment in Huddersfield. He hasn't seen her for weeks and so Sally and Jan, the ladies in the Road Safety Unit have taken him out with them for a day to cheer him up and to show him what they do best.
First of all they have taken him to Southam to replace the battery in a speed visor warning sign near a local school. If you remember from his earlier days with us Gary learned that reducing child casualties is one of the government's road safety priorities at the moment and the public seem to react better to these speed visor signs than to other warning signs because they light up as you approach them and help remind you of the speed limit. Do you remember Gary's message for drivers near schools? That's right he said "Kill your speed - not a child!" So every time motorists see the school warning sign by the roadside they should take extra care. Do you know what the school sign looks like? Where will you find it? That's right - its in the Highway code. You are doing well!
After that its off to Leamington to carry out a road safety audit with one of the County Council Road safety Engineers. It is important that these surveys are carried out after new roads have been built to make sure that it has been built correctly and that there are no road safety concerns. Like the Police the road safety engineers are often ladies so once again Gary is a bit outnumbered but he is being spoilt so he doesn't complain. The road is very well built but for a little joke Gary pretends he is a builder and says "Which cowboy built this then?" and makes the ladies laugh. Funny Gary!
Now its time to be serious again and its off to North Warwickshire to meet a man who can't get out of his drive safely because of overgrown bushes at the roadside. If you remember the man could have contacted the council direct by using the website link Gary gave you last week but having seen the problem for himself Gary has contacted the County surveyor instead. That's kind of you Gary.
While they are still in North Warwickshire they meet the Network manager for the county Council who wanted to discuss a problem with a one-way system in Curdworth. Gary and Sally went to the scene with the network manager and looked at the plans he brought with him.
