Day 23: Gary's day out with the RSU

Gary in coat pocketRoad safety is all about the three E's. Education, Engineering and Enforcement. After every fatal or very serious road collision it is important that the Road Safety Unit and the County Council Road safety Engineers visit the scene of the collision and examine whether anything more could be done to prevent another collision in the future. Sally has brought Gary to look at a road near Binley Woods. Can you see Gary in Sally's pocket?

Gary is checking how grippy the road surface isTogether they look at everything, from the trees at the roadside to the markings on the road itself. Gary is checking how grippy the road surface is and whether it needs any repairs.

Gary checking mapGary needs to know how many collisions there have been on this road over recent years and so with Sally's help back in the office he checks it out on the computer and takes a closer look at some road plans for the area.

If it seems there is an upward trend in the collisions, Phil, one of the other people in the Road safety Unit will direct all of the Roads Policing team to pay special attention to the road for a month. His collision data will tell him the most important days of the week to be there, the most important times, the causes of previous accidents and any additional issues such as alcohol or excess speed.

During December the Roads Policing Unit will be spending extra time patrolling just four routes through Nuneaton, Hillmorton and Leamington which collectively have seen as many as 64 people killed and 467 injured in the last four years. A lot of people don't realise how dangerous the roads can be but through Engineering, Enforcement and Gary's help in Educating road users the Roads Policing Unit are trying to help reduce those statistics. Gary says "Please take care on the roads and help me to make Warwickshire the safest place to be"
