Day 9: Gary learns the Highway Code and spots a Dinosaur warning sign !

Gary the RPU bear reading the Highway CodeToday Gary has been with the Police driver training department. Before they can teach Police officers to drive their cars in emergency situations they must first make sure that the officers have a good working knowledge of the Highway Code. Gary is reading it now.

The Highway Code is essential for everyone who uses the roads, adults and children, pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders as well as car drivers and motorcyclists. It contains lots of rules and good advice but although it is regularly updated, too many adults haven't read it since the day they passed their driving tests many years ago.

How many times do you see cars waiting in yellow box junctions blocking the traffic instead of keeping the junction clear for other road users?

How many people do you see driving their cars while talking on their mobile phones?

How many times do you see people who only ever drive in the middle lane of the motorway?

These are all people who haven't read the Highway code for a very long time.

The Highway code is a small book that costs less than £2 and is available from most bookshops. What a brilliant Christmas present it would be for someone in your family. You would help them to become better drivers and might even save their lives!

Gary the RPU bear near road signGary has seen a sign by the roadside at Ladbroke near Southam - what do you think it means ? Is it real or do you think is someone is playing a joke? I wonder how many people have driven past it without even noticing it? If they knew what the signs meant they would probably take more notice of them.

Gary says "If you use the road - know the Highway Code"
