A day in the life of … Force Crimestoppers Co-ordinator
At only 8 o'clock and when I arrive at work, a group of Crimestoppers call handlers are already finishing after the night shift at a call centre in Godstone, Surrey.
My first task of the day is to check the emails and faxes, every morning I receive an email from the call centre with details of last night's calls, this then gets sent on to the police who see what they can do.
Crimestoppers is a charity working to stop crime in the UK. The public can call in without anyone knowing to tell someone about a crime or any information they feel may be important. People can call us about things that happen in their community like graffiti and drugs. Because of this, the charity wants to make people feel safe enough to report crimes.
Employees are answering calls all around the country every minute of everyday so that no calls are missed. All calls are anonymous which means that no one knows who you are, as well as this the call cant be traced back to you so that there's no risk of anyone finding out.
One of my jobs is to work with local schools telling young people about how they can help in the fight against crime. I also make posters and leaflets in order to make sure as many people know about Crimestoppers as possible. Once a month, my team and I have to do something called regional coverage, this means we have to answer the Crimestoppers calls for that area every evening for a week.
That's me finished for the day, but even though my shifts just finished, another Crimestoppers work has just begun.
