Keeping your bike safe
Be Aware
Over 100,000 bicycles are stolen every year. Thieves love them because they can be sold easily and anonymously.
Mark It
Marking your bike with your postcode can help police return it to you when they find it. You can also mark your bike with SmartWater - each batch of Smartwater solution has its own individual chemical blueprint. Smartwater is easily detected using an ultraviolet lamp, its presence is immediately indicated by a fluorescent yellow glow. When stolen property is recovered it can be sent to the forensic science laboratory so that the rightful owner can be identified from the unique blueprint.
Log It
Ask the police or your cycle dealer for a recorded cycle form, which will put a full description of your bike on a database.
Lock It
Buy a sturdy lock as chains are OK, but they can be cut with the right tools. Much better is a D-lock. Lock both tyres, and remove any accessories (like lights or the seat) that can be easily stolen.
